Fotos / Photo Gallery of our area in Eastern Westfalia - Lippe

(c) Dr. Stuart Savory, 2003

We live in a rather rural area, a village called Henglarn(pop.600, elev.1000, etablished 847 AD{sic!}), which is about 12 miles south of the small city of Paderborn (pop. 80,000 elev.300). Paderborn is a city by definition only, because it has a cathedral (the Pope visits it once every thousand years ;). The area from here on up to 50 miles north is known as Eastern Westphalia - Lippe (OWL). These photos are intended to give you some idea of the rural nature of our countryside in OWL.

Early morning on the front porch
We live out in the country, where folks (like me) like to sit outside on the front porch and catch some sunshine.
Sow with piglets
About 100 yards west there is a farm, so when the west wind blows, it smells somewhat "countryside" here, too :)
Garden view
This is the view in the back garden, nothing but countryside :)
Mehntal
The dog loves to go for walks in the nearby "Mehn" valley.
The 'Mehn' creek
At low water you can cross the Mehn creek easily. See the high water mark on the trees on the right of the creek?
Steinbruch
On the other side of the valley is an old pre-war quarry, unused nowadays, except perhaps by badgers and foxes.
Paderborner Dorf near Detmold
Some villages have a pond, with 16th century farmhouses
old jail house
This 17th century jailhouse looks rather fragile.
Doorway carvings
House doors are often ornately carved and the lintel bears the names of the couple who built the house.
Horses
In summertime, you can go for a ride in a horse and cart, between villages (but we're not Amish).
